Upper Roanoke River Roundtable
Mission Statement
To serve as an advisory group in the upper basin that will identify and address issues of water quality and quantity and will make recommendations about appropriate management solutions to those whose decision impact the upper basin of the Roanoke River.
Goals
- Identify local, regional, and basin-wide concerns and problems.
- Seek the responsible use, orderly economic development and conservation of our land and water resources.
- Provide input to potential management solutions.
History
In 1999, local stakeholders began coordinating stream monitoring efforts on the Roanoke River. They gathered support from local environmental groups and agencies and in July 1999, held the first Roanoke River Watershed Conference at Explore Park. Stream monitoring continued throughout the year and at the second conference, in September 2000, a five-year plan was developed. From this plan a steering committee evolved and formal meetings began in January 2001. The first general membership meeting of the Upper Roanoke River Roundtable (URRR) was held in June 2001 at Virginia Western Community College. A board was chosen at that meeting from the steering committee and membership and formally elected at the third conference held at Explore Park in September 2001. That conference was the first annual membership meeting of the URRR.
Our committee members are the people who are primarily responsible for developing and implementing the goals, and initiatives, of the Roundtable. Click here to visit the Committees home page.
